2003 MAPublisher Map Competition Awards Results

The 2003 MAPublisher Map Competition produced an over-whelming and exciting group of entries and proved to be a successful follow-up to previous years' events. More than 60 maps were submitted this year and in many cases the task of selecting a category winner was not easy.

Maps were received from locations as far apart as Namibia and Latvia and represented geography from locations as varied as Manhattan and Kamchatka. Entries were received from a variety of academic, governmental and private business organizations and individuals. Each and every map exemplified excellent and knowledgeable use of MAPublisher as well as skillful cartographic eyes and hands.

We would like to thank all of those who took the time to enter our competition and although we could only select a small sample as the best in each category we want to congratulate all entrants for a job well done.
Below you will find a detailed listing of all the winners and honourable mentions and have an opportunity to view each of these great works. ENJOY!

Copyright: Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Namibia
Description: This atlas was published at the end of last year and unfortunately this brief description and the images to the left do not to justice to this amazing piece of work. Apart from thematic maps, the atlas also has topographical, geological, climatic, transportation, etc. maps. It comprises six chapters: Introduction (including 7 topographical maps of the country), physical geography, climate, plants and animals, the land, and the people. The last thematic atlas of Namibia was published 20 years ago. This new atlas is a compilation of the latest GIS, images and statistical information for the country. It was compiled and produced over three years and only possible through the generous support of a great number of people and organisations. The Atlas Project was based in the Ministry of Environment (Directorate of Environmental Affairs) and funded by the Government of Finland, through a bilateral agreement. The book is one of two products of the project. The second product is the data that were assembled and processed to produce the maps. This data is available on the web at www.dea.met.gov.na

Title: Greater Philadelphia Regional Bicycle Map
Author(s): Steve Spindler, Gerry Krieg, John Boyle
Organization: Steve Spindler Cartography, Jenkintown, PA, USA
Copyright: Steve Spindler Cartography
Description: This is a map designed by Steve Spindler Cartography, with data from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. A number of programs were used in creating the map. Data was imported to Adobe Illustrator 10 operating in OSX. MAPublisher was used to import and reproject data. DEMS were imported using Natural Scene Designer. Layers of data, such as parks and relief, were exported to Photoshop to add transparencies and then replaced in Illustrator at 150dpi. The final map was submitted to the printer, Pearl Pressman Liberty, as an illustrator file. They printed the map on both 70# coated stock and on Granwell plastic stock. The goal was to show the complete road system for a region that includes nine counties. The road were rated using Bicycle Level of Service models and included a great deal of field observation. The web page (www.bicyclecoalition.org/map/index.html), was created by slicing the map into segments using ImageReady. The sections were then imported back into Illustrator.

Title: City of Blantyre
Author(s): Jonathan Shadreck Gwaligwali, submitted by Wim Feringa
Organization: International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Enschede, The Netherlands
Copyright: ITC
Description: The map, a topo-sheet 1:25000 of Blantyre, Malawi, is a student's final assignment produced using data from the Survey Department of Malawi. This map was last produced in 1976 by the Ordnance Survey of England. Since then the map had never been updated so this map was produced as an updated version of that topo sheet as part of the curriculum at ITC. The final part of the course for the students is to produce a map or application that serves the institute or organization they come from. It is usually best if students have a specific description and of course data. Mr. Gwaligwali had some data and a student from the same organization had some aerial photos. They combined some work. Mr. Gwaligwali decided to work out a low-cost but high quality production line for updating and producing topo-sheets.The map was compiled and created by digiting aerial photos in Freehand with MAPublisher 4.0 and then exporting the data to Arcview as shapefiles. Once the data was completed the author created a set of styles within Freehand which were applied to the reimported shapefile data. Within only six weeks the student had setup the map specifications, designed the workflow procedure, created a style sheet, updated and edited the data and produced the map. Recently the Surveyor General of Malawi send ITC a letter stating that ".. he (Gwaligwali) produced one of the best topographic maps ..." and "...the map impressed the entire Department." Mr. Gwaligwali was asked to complete the map because it is in very high demand.

Title: Lower Manhattan Virtual Tour
Author(s): Sumiyo Giampietro, Gregg Faus, Hepp Maccoy and Susan Baggett
Organization: Company 39, Inc., Denver, CO, USA
Copyright: Company 39, Inc.
Description: The original map data (shape files) were imported into Illustrator 9 using Avenza's MAPublisher filters for Adobe Illustrator 9. Once the layers were in Illustrator, the designer made the appropriate changes/stylization to the map for this Virtual Tour. Macromedia Flash was then used to create the user interface which was well thought out and incorporated actionscripting. This map contains a lot of linked files such as text data files and VR images in .swf format. This is quite an exciting piece of work combining geography and multimedia and the final production includes a variety of media formats. The Lower Manhattan Virtual Tour can be found at http://www.lowermanhattan.info/flash/virtualtour/

Title: Recreation and Historical Sites on Public Lands of Arizona
Author(s): Steve Gordon
Organization: Cartagram, LLC, Madison, AL, USA
Copyright: Arizona Office of Tourism, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Description: This map was produced using Adobe Illustrator 10.x, Adobe Illustrator 8.x, Macromedia FreeHand 10.x and MAPublisher 4.0. The biggest challenge was integrating data from many sources. While waiting for data from to be compiled by the federal agencies, Mr. Gordon began producing the map from downloaded public land boundary data from the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and BLM. This data was integrated with downloaded Arizona state data from different sources (DLG, DCW). Once the "official" data came in it was added that to the file and the data was sorted to come up with the layers that were used in the map. Later, as localized data came in for specific sites that had changed recently, Mr. Gordon was able to integrate it into the map by importing it into the original data file. The data was compiled in FreeHand but did the map finishing was done in Illustrator.

Title: Central Mekong and Mun River Basins
Author(s): Sebastien Caquard
Organization: Dartmouth Flood Observatory, Hanover, NH, USA
Copyright: Sebastien Caquard
Description: This map is the first one of a series. This series represents large world wide flood events detected by satellite. This map is composed of shaded relief maps in a UTM projection. Surface water was detected by NASA's MODIS sensors which provided a standard water level for comparison purposes. Inundation limits for each month were combined and shown as one map color. The Satellite data were obtained by Dartmouth Flood Observatory staff, processed to detect water/land boundaries, geocoded to standard UTM map projections, and analyzed to produce inundation limits in a vector GIS format (MIF/MID). These vectors were then imported into Illustrator with MAPublisher, in addition to other layers (borders, rivers, towns, etc.). The maps are being continually updated from archival satellite data, and as new floods occur. Through this process we are compiling an increasingly comprehensive global atlas of flood hazards.
