  • Introduction

Scalable vector graphics, or SVG, is a new graphics file format and Internet development language based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language). SVG enables website developers and designers to create dynamically generated, high-quality graphics from real-time data with precise structural and visual control. With this powerful new technology, SVG developers can create a new generation of Web applications based on data-driven, interactive, and personalized graphics.

SVG files are vector files rather than the usual raster files one typically sees on the Internet. This means that they are quickly and easily scalable, zoomable and load much faster in a web browser. This is one of the things that makes SVG a perfect format for delivering maps over the Internet.

    Viewing Requirements

In order to view SVG files in your web browser you will need the SVG browser plugin. This is a free plugin for your browser that is provided by Adobe Systems Inc. and is available on their website. This plugin will allow you to view SVG files created by Adobe Illustrator 9.0 or later as well as those created in other SVG authoring applications including MAPublisher-SVG. To see some files we created with MAPublisher and MAPublisher-SVG, check out our SVG map gallery.

Please note that the Mac version of Microsoft Internet Explorer is not currently supported by the MAPublisher-SVG applets due to its (IE'S) lack of complete support for Javascript.

For further information on SVG technology in more detail please consult one of the links in the menu above.

    MAPublisher-SVG

Within this site you will learn about our MAPublisher-based solution for turning geographic information systems (GIS) files into data-rich SVG map files that retain their GIS attribute tables in a searchable and queriable form. With MAPublisher and MAPublisher-SVG you can create not only an eye-pleasing vector web map but also one that can reveal information to your visitors. The MAPublisher-SVG exporter allows your MAPublisher map document to be exported from Adobe Illustrator in SVG format and when used with the included Javascript 'wrapper' applets and html sample code, provides all that is necessary for your SVG map to be searched and queried by web browsers.

As this is our first public unveiling of this technology we are inviting interested MAPublisher for Adobe Illustrator users to download MAPublisher-SVG on a demonstration/beta basis in order to help us refine and build upon this initial offering and create a very useful and powerful web map creation tool.

    Additional Software Requirements

In order to use MAPublisher-SVG to generate interactive SVG maps you must have the following applications on your system:
  • Adobe Illustrator 9.x*
  • MAPublisher 3.5 or later for Adobe Illustrator
(*MAPublisher-SVG is not currently supported under Illustrator 10)

If you have both of the above applications then the next step is to download the MAPublisher-SVG package. After that it is all up to you. Use your GIS data to create a great map like you usually do and then use the MAPublisher-SVG exporter to generate the necessary files to place your creation on the world wide web.
