I have found that the easiest way of getting an online geoPDF map into Avenza Maps on my iPad (IOS 11.3) is to simply open the geoPDF in the Safari web browser and then tap the Share icon. Avenza Maps is then displayed as an option in the Share menu (shown as Copy to Avenza Maps). Tap on that and the geoPDF is automatically imported straight into Avenza Maps. Easy.
The problem is that this method works only when using the Safari web browser. I have tried the latest IOS versions of Chrome, Dolphin, Edge, and Firefox and none of them have Copy to Avenza Maps in the Share menu. Because of this, you first have to save the geoPDF on your device and then import it into Avenza Maps. Not difficult, but it adds an extra step compared to how easy it is when using the Safari browser.
I am aware that in IOS you can scroll to the right on the Share menu and tap on More… to see additional apps that can be added to the Share menu. However, Avenza Maps is not shown on the Share > More… screen, and IOS has no option to add an app to the Share > More… screen if it is not already there.
So, my question to the Avenza Maps developers is this: is the Share > Copy to Avenza Maps option implemented by the web browser, or is it something that the Avenza developers have to implement in Avenza Maps? If this is handled within Avenza Maps, is this something that could be added to a future release of Avenza Maps?April 13, 2018 at 3:50 pm #10059rebeccaMember
Thank you for your post! The maps will allow ‘Copy to Avenza Maps’ in Safari because Safari is a native iOS app. The option to ‘Copy to Avenza Maps’ within other browsers is a function of the browser itself and not always within our control. Officially we only support Safari for iOS and Chrome for Android but we can look into linking the ‘share with’ functionality with other browsers.

Thanks for the info. It’s good to know where the limitation lies – in this case, at the browser level.
I do think it would be good though, if Avenza could “look into linking the ‘share with’ functionality with other browsers.” That would be a huge benefit, as not everyone uses Safari, and trying to keep track of which browser to use in which situation is a hassle. The more browsers that Avenza Maps can utilize the ‘share with…’ function in, the better!April 19, 2018 at 1:47 pm #10195rebeccaMember
